Spring Ahead with Make-Up Artist Valerie Star

Make-up artist Valerie Star strives to make the world a pretty place — one face at a time. She loves what she does for a living and it shows. This week, I asked Valerie to share her favorite make-up and hair care products as well as provide her “what’s hot in Spring 2013?” predictions. Here’s what she had to share:

Olive: Nice to see you again, Valerie! When we last left off, you were giving me one-on-one make-up advice. Now, I need you to look into your crystal ball and tell my friends and I what you see in our fashion and make-up futures.

What trends do you see for Spring and which ones do you recommend people try? Which trends do you think have simply got to go?

Valerie: I’m not a psychic, but I love that the RED lip was prevalent in so many runway shows during New York Fashion Week. You can use any shade of red that works for your skin tone. A smoky eye also was embraced on the runways this fashion season. Mix it up with any shade of shadow and have fun mixing and matching hues to give the perfect bedroom eyes.

Another trend I saw was nails, nails, nails…. I am in love with all the fun nail art that is going on at the moment! it is so simple to add a little fun in your daily look with a small surprise on your nails. I also saw sexy waves in the models’ hair and they looked smashing while walking down the runway. Effortlessly easy beauty.

I also saw “beehive” hair was seen on the catwalk….this is one trend I could do without! Not many people could really pull this off anyway. In addition to the beehive style, the very thick and heavy eyebrow should be done only in moderation and really shouldn’t be done. For most women’s everyday look, it is too harsh.

Olive: What are some of your favorite make-up brands and hair care products?

Valerie: I have a few different products that I just can’t live without. For makeup, my must-haves are:

■ POP Beauty – Beam Base Primer (it’s a great illuminating cream that gives a beautiful glow to the skin, plus it fortifies with vitamins, plumps and evens skin texture and tone.)

BenNye – Camouflage wheel (a multi-sectioned palette of concealer shades to hand mix, create the perfect color for every area of your face. It gives you the ability to have a bit lighter under the eye and fading into exact skin tone.) Use a small amount of BenNye Camouflage mixed with Beam Base Primer and you have a wonderful foundation.

■ POP Beauty Lip Stain – Every shade is great and you can mix the stains to create so many different colors. It is long lasting and you can wear it matte or add gloss for shine.

My must-have hair care products are:

■ Salon Grafix’s Healthy Hair Nutrition Restyler – It gives you the ability to feel as if you just washed your hair. It brings life back to day old hair, protects hair from the heat of a hot styling tool.

■ Moroccan Oil – This Moroccan Oil Treatment is absorbed by the hair instantly, resulting in a natural, silky finish and brilliant shine. Moroccan Oil has the ability to restore over-processed hair damaged by environmental factors and chemical procedures. It also revives, hydrates and detangles hair, wigs and hair extensions.

■ Salon Grafix High Gloss Hair Spray (Perfect to add protection for color-treated hair or to enhance the brightness of natural hair, light-reflecting, flexible hold High Gloss Hair Spray creates such radiant shine.

Olive: What is the one beauty item you couldn’t live without?

Valerie: Oh, now that’s a hard one to answer! I guess it would have to be mascara.

Olive: What is the best beauty advice you’ve received?

Valerie: “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” ― Coco Chanel

Olive: Absolutely! Who could argue with the wisdom of Coco Chanel?
